This report covers compliance data gathered for RII-77, a Portland cement grinding aid, in compliance with ASTM-C-465-74, "Standard Test Method for Processing Additions for Use in the Manufacture of Hydraulic Cements".

The pairs of cements for this evaluation were ground at the Midlothian, Texas plant of Texas Industries, Inc.; the Artesia, Mississippi plant of United Cement Company; the Harleyville, South Carolina plant of Santee Portland Cement Corporation; the Chanute, Kansas plant of Ash Grove Cement Company; the West Des Moines, Iowa plant of Penn Dixie Industries, and the Keystone Portland Cement Company plant at Bnth, Penna.

The cement samples were all shipped to ROAN INDUSTRIES, Inc., 439 South Bolmar Street, West Chester, Pa. for testing.

The chemical and physical results were developed by Ambrie Testing, Inc., and are shown on the enclosed tables. Greenwood Laboratories was responsible for the development of a test method for determination of the percent of RII-77 in Portland cement.

It is believed that these data are sufficient to comply with ASTM-C-465, and, consequently, the additions requirement of ASTM-C-150, "Standard Specification for Portland Cement".

Dear Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to certify that on April 13, 1977, Type III cement containing Roan Industries, Inc.'s cement grinding aid RII-77 was ground at Ash Grove Cement Company's Chanute, Kansas, facility.

The cement produced complies with ASTM specifications C-150 and sampling procedures for both the cement containing RII-77 and the control cement containing W. R. Grace's HEA-2 were in accordance with ASTM specifications C-465.

RII-77 was added to the finish mill system in a solution containing about 13% active material.

Both RII-77 and HEA-2 were added at an approximate rate of 0.04%.

PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINATION OF RII-77 IN PORTLAND CEMENT

Ten grams of cement is vigorously stirred with ten mls. of cold water for one minute in a 50 ml. centrifuge tube. The tube is then centrifuged for three minutes and the liquid decanted. Five mls. of water is then added and the above procedure repeated with the decanted liquid being added to that previously collected. Five mls. of water is again added and the above procedure repeated.

A two micro liter sample of the extracted liquid is then passed through a gas chromatograph using helium gas as a carrier and at a temperature of 200 C. The major curve response is then accurately measured for area and this converted to micrograms based on a standard chromatogram. A series of standard samples, made by using cement samples containing 0.0%, 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.04% and 0.06% RII-77 shall be run and a calibration curve drawn. This shall be done each time a series of unknown samples are run. The percent addition of the unknown samples is then determined from the calibration curves.

Using this procedure, a standard error of estimate of 0.001% and a correlation coefficient of 0.986 was found on the curve drawn from the standard samples. The following percentages were found in test cement.
